I recently finished reading the book "The Steve Jobs Way". Though the book talks about Steve Jobs' management style and what a visionary he was, I cannot help myself exclaiming that he was the best Product Manager that the industry would ever see.

As a budding PM, I got to learn a lot from how he conceptualized, designed and executed the products that revolutionized the industry. As a best PM, he always kept consumers first and always kept on aiming for perfection to please the end users.

Similar to Steve Jobs, a PM needs to be passionate about his Product. It was Steve's passion that gave world such wonderful products like Mac, iPod, iPhones. It was this passion of his which gave him a lot of driving force and he turned a deaf ear to words like 'This cannot be done'. His passion motivated him to push his team harder to get the desired product. His passion made him the best evangelist of his products. Who can forget his great presentations at WWDC evangelizing the new era of music players, phones and tablets.

A PM should always pay attention to every detail especially the ones pertaining to customer experience. This will help a PM in conducting continuous innovation to get closer to an ideal product. There are so many stories dedicated to Steve's attention to details and this blog would be insufficient to quote all of them. And the best thing about him was that he always accompanied details with quality and simplicity. He always wanted the products to be simple to use and never believed in having complex user manuals. This is the main reason behind iPhone having only a single button. Like Steve, a PM should be the ultimate user of his own products
He was a master in converting customer's wants to needs.

Often he used to quote Henry Ford "If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse'." He used to believe that if we ask a group of users - even those who aren't dissatisfied with a product - how to make it better, they will just end up thinking of things that are wrong with the product. The best that we would get from this exercise is incremental improvements. This won't lead to innovation or dramatically new products. Even I believe rather than asking users for features or solutions, just ask them the problems that they are facing and try to solve them using your expertise. He knew the expertise and strengths of his team well. He believed in holistic product development but at the same time knew when to partner with others.

As a owner of the product, a PM needs to take significant decisions by trusting his guts and insights. Then you need to ensure that you convince all the stakeholders for executing this decision. I cant really quote Steve's example here because he had a full authority on the team and could get things done in his own way, but he earned this respect and position because of the qualities mentioned above.

The best way to keep on improving these skills is by "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish!!"

Steve, thanks for being an inspiration always. R.I.P !!

So the best thing I thought of sharing with all are the last 6 months as a Product Manager as that would summarise a lot of things that I have been upto in the past (obviously excluding things at personal front)

Well, I was one of the few people (single digit I suppose) from my batch at IIMB who opted for a career in Product Management and thought of returning back to the Software industry. You feel good sometimes that you are out of the rat race but at the same time it give you jitters. You wonder if this is the right move after 2 years of investment in MBA as none of your other batchmates want to board this train. But slowly as you interact with more people you realize that all of us are different in one way or the other with different interests, passions and priorities in life. So, to make a better choice for yourself you need to understand yourself better and need to give some time for things to settle down. You get more confidence on your decision when a leading Business Magazine of the country features you in their cover story for doing things differently.

Anyways, afterall these thinking and introspection, I settled with the Product Management role in a leading storage company. I wanted to start my PM career at a place where I could learn the initial nuances of job and get a good mentoring from some senior people. At the same time, I didn't want a small piece of the pie (read it as PM of part of the product based on location). I wanted to work with a strong Engineering team so that my interest in technology booms further. Haven spoiled by the excellent environment in Google, I wanted to work in a company which can boast of its work culture globally and believes in giving a lot of freedom to its employees. Taking all this into consideration, I found NetApp as the best fit for me amongst the available opportunities at that time.

Its the first time that NetApp hired fresh B School grads as PMs but they did a splendid job in ramping us. I must say it took my couple of months to figure out what is happening around me. This is such a technology centric company that initially meetings were like Greek and Latin to me. But slowly, I started reading more about the technologies that we use and develop. I started talking to more people to understand the various products we deliver and slowly started to master my own product. It would be wrong to say if I never thought that why I needed a MBA degree if I had to work in such hard-core techie product (will answer that later). But my passion for technology and zeal to learn new things helped me ramp up soon enough. Infact within 6 months here I was in Delhi, talking to customers on my own and talking freely about our technology and the future roadmap. I was not only confident in talking about my product but also the complete package that we offer to customers (and definitely my MBA skills were helping me here). I was feeling so happy and getting such a kick out of all this. Finally, I had got what I wanted - a good mix of technology and business. I am now in a position where I understand the market and customer needs, translates them to requirements for my Engineering and deliver great products in the market to kick out the competition. I am part of the complete cycle and can see the big picture now.

At last, I am glad that I picked up something which aligns with my passion and didn't follow the rat race.

Disclaimer: All the views presented are my personal and not endorsed by my current employer in anywaysVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-34986856409938284032009-07-08T09:23:00.000-07:002009-07-08T15:33:34.880-07:00Google OS on its way! Finally the much talked about, hyped Google Operating System has been announced and it would be in market in a year's time. I remember numerous times people asked me "Google is launching its OS, right?" and when I you used to give them an amused look they used to feel that I am just keeping it confidential. I used to say that Google is a web based company and will not enter into desktop operating system. Well, I was partly right in saying that.

The new Google Chrome OS is a lightweight OS that would be designed majorly for the notebooks to run the web browser and web based applications. The best thing about it is that it would be open source which will result a huge developer community building applications on top of it which will soon make it popular. Definitely, it would be a great product for the users who just work on internet most of the time and rarely use their desktop for any other purpose. Its going to be fast, more secured, easy to use and obviously damn cheap compared to the existing Operating Systems.

But the question is if this OS would be able to challenge the No.1 in the market. Its definitely a threat for Microsoft but we still need to see how big. To make Chrome OS popular, we need to make internet even more powerful such that users dont need their desktops at all. Hopefully, this OS would provide that platform to create more user friendly web based applications which would make the costlier desktop hardwares and softwares useless. Cloud computing will definitely play a very big role in this.

Congrats Google! Way to go!!Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-74204506976374741802009-05-16T03:54:00.000-07:002009-05-18T04:29:13.871-07:00Chilled out at -6 degree celsiusIt was the first time, I was exposed to the temperature of -6 degree Celsius and it was really an awesome experience. Well, I didn't go to Antarctica but just to the Chillout Bar in Dubai. The place was completely frozen and everything there was made of ice. We were given a good thick fur jacket and gloves before entering in to the freezing zone but they could help only a little. I could stay there only for 40 minutes and had to come out twice to bring down my body to little normal temperature and avoid myself from freezing.

All the stuff in the bar was made of ice - the tables, chairs, glasses, show pieces etc. There was also a flower pot made of ice. Even the menu was a thick ice sheet and glasses for cold drinks were made of ice too. It was good that we got a complimentary hot chocolate which helped us a little. I had gloves on but still my hands were numb after sometime itself. We were clicking each and every corner of the bar. We were picking up each and everything : ice fish, ice stars, ice glasses to have a photo with them.

When you are in such a crazy place, you get to turn little more crazy and we were no exception. We ordered even a cold juice there to add to the chillness of the place. We were touching the ice cubes to our face to take the pic. And the best one came after half an hour. We were done with clicking all the places and objects in the bar. We got rid of our jackets, caps and gloves and came inside just in our normal clothes. We stayed there for around 3-4 minutes in similar state and had a quick round of photos. We were almost frozen to our depths when we ran away outside to the normal desert weatherVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-75826532905319062082009-05-16T01:08:00.000-07:002009-05-19T07:33:38.098-07:00The evening at Burj Al ArabThe day I landed in Dubai, I have been hearing about this tallest hotel of the world - Burj Al Arab. Supposedly it is the only 7 star hotel. Everytime when I used to pass by the Sheikh Zayed road or the Jumeirah road, I used to look at this magnificent piece of architecture with awe and used to click its photograph from my car window. When we visited the Jumeirah beach, we clicked more pics with Burj in the background rather than having sea in background.

I decided to visit this place after I saw the documentary which described how much effort went into construction of this hotel and how its so different from other buildings. Its built a few hundred metres inside the sea in the shape of sail which looks so simple and marvelous but it took great engineering minds to build it this way.

So, Finally this weekend our entire IIMB gang thought of hitting the Skyview bar of this hotel which is suspended 250 metres above the sea level and gives you a feeling as if its just hanging in the air without any support. Having a champagne at such a place was an awesome experience and we just kept on watching Dubai from this height with admiration. This was the costliest champagne that I have had in my life and I am sure I am not breaking this record for a decade. Also, this bar holds a Guinness book of records for serving the most expensive cocktail for 27,321 AED.

As usual we had lot of pics in the restaurant and enjoyed our champagne to the fullest. Also then we spent a lot of time in the beautiful lobby and had many pics there too (afterall we had to recover our cost :P).Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-22088559814372329722009-05-12T05:53:00.000-07:002009-05-13T04:01:10.085-07:00Xoogler's journey in the B SchoolMany people have been constantly asking me if it was a right decision to leave Google and join MBA. The count of such people was low when I have just joined IIMB because only doubt they had in mind was if I wasn't happy at Google; some where like what more do you expect than Google - it has an excellent work and culture. But as the economy plunged into recession and it started effecting job markets everywhere not even sparing the best B schools across the globe, the count of such people increased. Even when I wasn't thinking about this at all, they were constantly questioning me and trying to make me realise that this was the biggest mistake in my life till now.

I don't know if this was a right decision or wrong. As Steve Jobs say: "you can only connect the dots looking backwards". I am still only half a MBA and I had spent only one year at Google. So, at both the places I dont think results should be used for comparison. I won't like to see it from the point that I became a team lead in Google in just 6 months but wasn't one of the toppers in MBA.

If, any day I have to compare between these two places, I can just compare the experiences there and even then I would never say that one was much better/worse than other. Both the places had their own pros and cons. They were similar in many aspects - I had to meet deadlines at both the places, both the places gave me ample freedom to do what I want. If Google gave me 20%, IIMB gave me choice of electives and obviously all the time after the classes to do what I want.

Both gave me ample opportunities to learn. I learnt a lot about the corporate culture and one of the best at Google. I learnt how to behave professionally, how to conduct meetings, how to orgnaise and prioritise my tasks, how to do the perfect time management, how to meet my deadlines, how to work in a team, how to motivate my team, how to achieve the desired results and most importantly how to play foosball. I guess after coming to IIMB, these learnings continued and actually took the next bigger step. All these professional learnings were honed more when I was working as a member of the placement team and was interacting with companies. I learnt more and more about team work and time management when I was working in so many teams to complete my projects along with managing the studies and placecom tasks.

Both the places gave me an exposure to the outer world with small international stints. Its a different learning experience all together to go outside and work with people of different culture but similar objectives. Also, its much more exciting and you really enjoy a lot visiting so many places in such a short time. Not to forget both the places gave me many friends and contacts which will always be helpful to me wherever I go.

I have never limited my learning at IIMB to only academics and I think that was only possible because I came after a little industry experience which taught me that all these things do not matter in the long term. Because of this I was able to focus on other things which I liked doing. I was able to analyse the long term benefits of many things which were not giving me any short term benefits at IIMB. I am glad that I didn't lose the motive with which I entered into IIM.

I am no financial expert and I dont know when this recession will end and I dont even want to take any guess or make any hypothesis here. I would not mind if I get a lesser paying job from IIM. I never came here with the astronomical figures in mind. I came here to achieve my long term goals. Since, I would be achieving them in long term only, they are insulated from the recessions of the world. So again I wont like to compare these places with their end results in the short term but definitely I would like to cherish the experiences that I have gained here.

As somebody has rightly said, "Enjoy the journey, enjoy every moment, and quit worrying about winning and losing." So, I strive to enjoy the journey and not the destination.Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-8607609592235018802009-05-11T05:41:00.000-07:002009-05-12T04:25:09.274-07:00DubaiAs the title says, I am going to talk about Dubai in this blog. So, what brings me here: my summer internship which is part of curriculum at IIMB.

I came to UAE in April and after spending two weeks in Abu Dhabi, I came to the new luxury tourist hot spot of world - Dubai. Its a beautiful city which has both sea as well as deserts. To me it seems like India with US infrastructure. Yea, you can disagree with this but it comes from my limited exposure to only a few countries. Now, why I made such a statement was because you will find lot of Indians everywhere. There are so many Indian restaurants also around that you will hardly feel home sick because of food. Infrastructure is amazing. Awesome roads, wonderful bus/cab service, tall buildings, 24 hours power, big cars all around. I am surprised that still there is no railways/metro in this country.

Dubai has been always in news for its skyline. Leading from the front is Burj Dubai: tallest building in world and Burj Al Arab: tallest hotel in world and supposedly the only 7 star hotel. Hopefully, I will visit it this week. Apart from these there are many other great buildings in variety of shapes. Seems like people dont like making simple and small buildings here and all the architectural experiments are conducted here. The city has so many malls and they have hardly left out any brand. But one good thing in the malls here is they are based on some central theme and are not boring like malls in other countries. In a single mall you would find acquarium, zoo etc and in other you will find a place of skiing with a temperature of -4 degrees. Some malls have the traditional Arabic look and some look like Egyptian pyramids. Bottomline, you will never get bored in these malls as you will get chance to click so many photos and numerous opportunities of window shopping.

Weather here is hot as expected but you hardly feel it as everything is air conditioned. I also got a chance to go for the desert safari where I did Dune bashing in the car which was thrilling. We had the dinner in the camp and the icing on the cake was the Belle Dance. As desired by the rulers here, this place is rapidly growing as the favoured tourist spot and you will find many tourists at every place and numbers are expected to grow as Dubai is growing and coming up with more interesting options for the tourists.

http://picasaweb.google.com/bansal.vikas84/Dubai#Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-20759921516822128162009-05-11T03:46:00.000-07:002009-05-12T03:57:56.435-07:00Half MBA completedI have been thinking for long about writing this post and finally I am here. I was expecting this to be the chillest term so far but it just turned out to be the opposite.

From acads point of view, it was really cool. I had to select 3 electives, that means I could choose what I want to study. That relieves some pressure. BTW, you know IIMB is the only Indian B School that offers electives in the first year itself. So, studying half of the subjects of your choice and having some subjects in the kitty which dont have mid term definitely helps. Also, after been through two stressful terms, you anyways get used to all this.

But apart from studies, there are many more interesting events that term 3 offers. The most important one for me was the placement of the senior batch and that took most of the time. PPTs, laterals processes, long night meetings, interaction with companies and seniors, it was all fun and the most memorable moments at IIMB. Finally, we were relieved when the batch was 100% placed even in these tough times. As, I have mentioned in the earlier blog, its a very complex process and it was a great experience to run the show. Thanks to all of my batchmates and seniors who gave their full support for giving IIMB another successful placement season.

Also, third term is term of fun with Unmaad (cultural festival of IIMB). Because of my other engagements, I wasn't able to attend most of it and wasn't able to participate in the dance competition. Still, I made sure that I save some time to attend KK night and L^2. IIMB was a different place for these days with so many visitors from institutes all over the country which also helped in balancing the gender ratio at campus though only for 3 days.

And who can forget the shooting of bollywood movie 3 Idiots featuring Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman, Kareena, Boman Irani. All of them were on campus for around a month and again campus was more colourful in nights. It was nice to see that along with us somebody else was working late nights. I didn't get the time to go and have pictures with them but Madhavan and Sharman themselves dropped in our placeroom once to have a look at the place and thus giving us a chance to have a photo with them.

So, finally with all these happening events, half MBA is completed and I am here in Dubai enjoying my summer internship. Will talk more about Dubai in later blogsVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-78691718864158043642008-12-27T11:49:00.000-08:002009-05-11T05:05:58.482-07:00Another Term is GoneFinally one more term is done and I am a 1/3rd MBA now (hopefully :P). Yea you can just be hopeful after having such exams. But at the end of day 'who cares' because all are in the same boat. Well, the good news is that I have a one week off but the flip side to that is that I am not going to home this time.

So, with nothing else to do, I can look back at how did this term go. It was much different from the first term. Not only in terms of subjects, but also other activities that happened and the way we approached this term. Being a JPR, the burden of placements work grew by leaps and bound this time. Had a week of night outs. Twice I went to the class without having any sleep. Slept on my desk in placeroom once while working and by the time I got up, I realised that I have missed another operations class and thus another interesting case discussion. But still it was fun as usual.

I got to see a lot of ups and downs in this term and learnt a lot too. Starting from the buzz of the Placement season itself I knew this term will be far more exciting and important. I got to see two sides of the picture: both as a JPR and as a candidate in the process. Starting from the company PPTs to the shortlists coming out everyday was adding to the thrill of the entire drama. It was a high activity time: people working hard for each and every bullet point on their CV, putting endless efforts in cracking cases and understanding the downfall of Wall street; studying numerous reports of various companies/industries to become expert of one in such a short time. Stage was set and we finally went to the much awaited process: Summer Placement Process. Some people say that its one of the most complex process that we can be part of in our life. The complexity and pseudapa was much more than we had expected and I am glad that two months down the line, I will be running this process.

It was really a well organised event and hats off to our PRs who managed to place the largest ever batch of IIMB even in such tough market conditions. The best part was how the entire batch came together to help each other and do as much they could in their own capacity. Nobody celebrated his/her achievement till the time entire batch was placed. There was a lot to take away for all: even if you got a day 0 job or not; even if you got your dream job or not; if you got the highest salaries or not. It was a great learning experience and the winner is obviously the one who comes out of these up and downs with a even stronger spirit. Ultimately, IIMB batch 2008-10 was victorious and we celebrated it in true B style with a great L^2 party which I missed because I slept early after so many sleepless nights.

Oh did I miss the mid terms in this whole explanation which just happened a week before the placements. Its not like that they are no more important to us but the only thing is that once you go through all this in the first term, you get used to it and this time I had relaxed mid terms with just 3 of them. Hopefully next term would be even more chill atleast in this aspect. And yea as usual there were a lot of submissions, assignments, quizzes. And its tough to remember which one I cracked and very easy to forget the ones which screwed me. After all who cares for a .1 or .2 here and there.

Finally, the term is over and its time for another one and more exciting one. Dont know how much I will get to study in this term but I am happy that I would be doing something which I enjoy doing!!Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-8607690321375344072008-09-30T14:32:00.000-07:002009-05-11T05:05:58.482-07:00One was June 22 when I stepped into the revered walls of IIMB with loads of dreams and aspirations in my eyes and I am happy to see that all of them are still alive and the passion is still firing with all guns to achieve them. The rigour academic pressure had tried to put many dents in the firm will but it finally ended in just testifying the strength of the same. Zillions of assignments, surprise quizzes, tests, and presentations have just helped in sharpening my jaws which are hungry to bite more of learning everyday.
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">First of all I am sorry to all my readers to whom I have promised that I will keep them updated about my life @IIMB as I had done during my work at Google. Well, when I entered IIMB, I knew that’s its going to be tough but I never knew that its going to be so hectic. At the same time, I never knew that its going to be filled up with so much fun. More I worked harder, more I had reasons to enjoy and live every single moment to the fullest. Be it the BHASAD of our sec A guys on nay random topics or be it the fruitful project and assignment discussions, it was always good to see be surrounded with such bright minds of the country. Everybody here is GOD in some way or the other and has a lot to offer to learn from: Be it through the CP(Class participation) or be it through their enlightening presentations or be it any arbit chat on any random topic. Godly profs giving awesome gyan to sleepy chaps with full CP enthu was a scene of almost every class. The system is so strong that it forces you to question yourself and your abilities and in the process prepares for the bigger challenges of the future. But yea sometimes in this strong system and hectic schedule, you tend to ask yourself: are you at the right place? Are you doing a right thing? Are you still focussed? But then suddenly you realise that you are nearing another sacrosanct deadline which you cant afford to miss and you postpone the answer to these questions by one more day.

<span style="font-size: 12pt; Well the 50% of the seats still remain reserved for the state where the NIT is located, but for the rest of the 50% seats, there is no state quotas and it will be open for all states. So, for new applicants, only AIR rank of AIEEE will matter if they are seeking admission in NIT outside their state and I guess they will have more number of options to choose from.

Its good on one side as the intake quality would be better but the diverse culture of NITs would be hit and it will interesting to see what happens when the culture of these established institutes changesVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-23541781198930435492008-06-16T10:35:00.000-07:002008-06-18T08:09:06.201-07:00Sweet memories@Google
Last week my team gave me and Akshay a farewell party as we are heading to IIM B. It was a very sweet gesture on their part and I thank one and all for that evening. During the dinner, some of them asked me to share some of my sweet memories at Google. Initially I thought it to be a very simple question to answer but when I started answering, it got very tough. Its not like I do not have many sweet memories there, but I had so many that it took a long time in scanning all of them and shortlisting only a few for sharing at that moment. It was then, that I thought of writing a blog for the same. So, here it goes:

As I go into the flashback, I can still clearly remember the first day. The feeling of going to “the best company to work for” (Fortune) was great. My cab came a little late to pick me up and when I reached Google, the induction had already started. The receptionist told me that its going on in Mumbai. For a moment, I was shocked, how will I get to Mumbai now. Then I learnt that its just the conference room name. The naming conventions of rooms and printers (based on city names, lakes, cartoons, movies and stars) is really cool and something which I would always remember. And believe what, the induction wasn't so boring as in other companies and was over in just a few hours. I got a laptop too, my first one and a goodie bag which had a T-shirt and a cool noogler cap with a fan on its top. I also got two 24" monitors which were looking so huge and I felt like watching movies on them instead of coding. The way other engineers were coming and greeting me, I was already feeling at home. They helped me in adjusting at Google soon enough by providing assistance whenever required. The manager gave me an overview of all the work that we were doing in Hyderabad(though he could have just told me about my project). I loved this openness and trust amongst the Googlers

Having the first popcorn on the bean bag, making maggi, enjoying coffee day express, munching all kind of snacks and chocolates for the entire day, help in foosball from other pro players were some of the things which attached me to Google and Googlers. And how can I forget the most important part: free meals which were wonderful. They had everything in lunch: North/south indian, chinese, italian, subway, salad bar, fruits, soups, deserts, blah-2. That was simply amazing and soon I gained a few pounds which was like a dream come true (you should see my college pics to understand this :P)

Then was the chance to see the dreamland: Google MTV(Mountain View) office. The feeling of stepping out of India for the first time was great. Got to see the beautiful Singapore on my way. Got a wonderful team and learned the pair programming art in MTV. I got a chance to pair with one of the smartest brains of the world: a guy who was world champion in rubix and had been coding since the year I was born. Others were also great and it was a tremendous learning experience( can write a complete blog on this itself). And yea I even had the much heard about Google onsite massage. It was so soothing that I was able to work till 2 am in night on that day without any complaints of head/back ache.

Then one day I went to the main buildings of Google; saw Larry and Sergey's cabin. I was also thrilled and excited to see the cabins of Orkut and some of the great Googlers(Google fellows). I could feel something different in the air and felt like working there for my entire life. Also, did I tell you that I got a chance to talk to Sergey face to face(though for just a minute) and also saw our CEO and Larry many times over. It was really a wonderful feeling to hear the company updates along with Sergey's PJs and some beer in TGIF. I loved the trust shown by the senior management on each and every Googler. The greatest learning in one year from Google was not any technology or language but the organizational behavior.

I also had a blast outside the office, went to so many beaches, mountains, valleys, Los Angeles that my picasa album was full of them. I loved driving there, had some beautiful scenic drives and went upto 80 mph on some freeways. I loved the Indian food there and of course Starbucks was the best. The trip also gave me some wonderful friends for life time. I must say it was a nice team building exercise :). To summarize, it was a wonderful lifetime experience and got to learn a lot from the US people: to be organised and patient(was evident in their driving itself).

Life at Hyderabad office was also fun. We loved the transition to the Google building. It's beautiful. To add to the colors, we had the cube decoration competition which was complete fun. Decorating the cubes as jungles, islands, villages, bars etc and showing all our engineering creativity was a good change.

Coming to offsites and parties. The offsite to Goa and Dandeli was too good and deserves another blog itself. Loved the first time rafting, trekking and water sports. We still tease Rahul for the wonderful dramas he did during all of this. The picnic party and rock night with Atif rocked!!

When I think of all this, I really feel nostalgic. I am sure I am gonna miss the fun of pair programming and the close foosball games. I am gonna miss the humorous Hindi phrases from Krishna and Sachin. I am gonna miss the leg pullings and the bumps for any and every reason. I am gonna miss my daily papaya servings and numerous dish choices in all the three meals. I am gonna miss the excitement that I used to get on learning about the latest Google inventions before the rest of the world. I am gonna miss the learnings from my peers and managers. I am gonna miss this lavish work environment and working with the smartest people of the world who have perfected the art of not being Evil.

I just wish that I continue being Googley!!
Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-15336248835761368292007-09-23T12:35:00.000-07:002007-09-25T00:06:02.628-07:00Trip to the beautiful MontereySep 22-23 was another fun filled weekend at US. We went to see the beautiful Monterey city. For your knowledge this place is also famous for its wineries , but unfortunately we didnt get the time to taste that at its famous tasteries

Well according to our plans we started at 8:00 in morning with Asharam and Krishna on driver seats of our two splendid cars and Vijay and me navigating them respectively. Our car had a GPS system but still we took the Google maps along with us. Obviously Google is more reliable than anybody else. On our way to Monterey we had planned to visit a Mystery Spot. This was a mysterious place (obviously the name says that). The amazing thing about the spot was probably something related to magnetism fundaes. The guide kept a ball in the middle of an inclined piece of wood. Now on a normal place the ball must have rolled down but since it was a mystery spot the ball climbed up without any force. That was absolutely amazing. But we geeky engineers though the ball had some trick in it. We tried that with our water bottle but even that behaved in the same way. This convinced us fully that there is something more mysterious than the women on this earth :D. After that we went to the special mystery cabin where again our Engineering knowledge was put to the test. There was a pendulum hanging from the ceiling. Now according to our physics study the pendulum swings the same distance to and fro on both sides. But here again the pendulum covered more distance on one side than other. The cabin itself was mysterious. We were standing straight in the cabin but still we were tending to fall on one side (and one person left the railing and he really fell down to be the laughing stock of the group). Also though we were standing straight on the ground, it felt as if we are standing inclined at some angle.

After playing with mysteries, we left for Monterey. The drive to this place was awesome. We went through some hilly areas which had some sharp curves and some steep slopes. Also the sceneries on our side after that were awesome. Saw the beautiful US farms and country side homes and tried to capture most of them in our cams. Finally we reached the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was a busy area and thronged by people and we realised that soon when it took us 30 minutes to park our car. Finally we went in to explore the wonderful sea creatures which included my first experience with the sea otters. They swam so well and so cutely and their back stroke was awesome. Four of them were playing a kind of hide n seek game which the crowd enjoyed a lot. After that I went to spend some time with the jelly fish. I had seen a few of them in Sentosa, Singapore but the number and variety here was huge. Before this I never imagined that we have so many kinds of jelly fish on this planet and I am sure we were still missing many more. More, I saw the different fishes, sharks, octopus, crabs etc-etc-etc, more I realised how vast and beautiful our nature is.
And after this was the time for the best shot. Yes, it was time for the 17 mile drive which had the beautiful 21 spots including some golf courses, wonderful beaches, awesome view points, a ghost tree and the best country side houses on the way. Well, due to the shopping spree of my dear fellas we weren't able to cover all of them but we did mange to stop at some of them and got ourselves clicked with the beautiful sceneries behind us. As it was getting dark we had to rush back to our place as we had to drive another 80 miles. But some of us were quite hungry and it took us 3 hours to satisfy their hunger(actually half of the time to look for the Indian restaurant.
we love Indian food..dont we:P)Finally, the restaurant was a good find where we even managed to have a hukka for the first time. And we ended the dinner, by bursting away that hukka. Now, dont ask me how we did that. After all we are engineers man and dont we know that if we blow with force in a closed surface it will burst out of pressure, especially when it is made up of glass!! But anyways we got rid of it and even managed to get an apology from the owner.
So, it was time to say good bye to the beautiful Monterey and the safe driving placed us in our apartments in one piece at 1:30 in night. To summarize, it was a memorable trip and the pics would now do the rest of talkingVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-59712865972614099082007-09-14T00:27:00.000-07:002007-09-23T12:35:17.476-07:00Trip To Santa Cruz
After a long journey of 36 hours including the 10 hr exciting transit at Singapore, Santosh, Krishna and me reached San Fransisco airport and from there straight to the Mountain View hotel. We hardly got 5 hrs to sleep as our fellow Googlers have already planned an exciting trip to Santa Cruz BroadWalk. Though we were little tired and suffering from jet lag but we couldnt say no for such a wondeful trip. And obiously, weekends are not the time to sleep but to enjoy. So early in the morning we left to see the beautiful beaches. But half of the excitement came down when we missed the bus and our fellow friends. The best part of the story was that we didnt had the cell phone and I dont know why the US phone booths were very stubborn and didnt let me make any call. But somehow we managed to get hold of each other and started for the trip by boarding the bus.
Now according to our fellow Googler Vijay's directions who was playing the role of guide, we had to change the bus and take another one which goes to Santa Cruz. But we found out that the bus he figured out doesnt go there. But the driver told us some other way out. So we have to come back to the point where we started. Then finally we got the right bus. It took around an hour and went through some slopes which had beautiful sceneries( acc to Namrata) but what I observed the most were the nice cars. They were too good. And the bikes which we saw were ultimate. I wish I could own one such.
And then we reached Santa Cruz BroadWalk. It was a lovely place. The beach was huge and had an amusement park on the shore. Since we guys were very hungry, we though of grabbing a pizza. Now here I wud like to mention that US is very strange sometimes in categorising its food products in veg/non-veg. There was a vegetable dish on the menu which contained egg :D and some dishes which contained the dairy products were categorised as non veg :P
After filling up our stomaches, we started with the the real fun; we went to the beach. The water was so chilled that for the moment it looked that I am frozen. But within a minute I got used to that and started enjoying. The huge waves were hitting me with a pressure and I was enjoying fighting with them. Facing the waves without moving form my place gave me a felling of being strong and I loved that. The fun part was when the waves receded back, it took the mud along with it and u would feel as if the earth below u is moving away :). Krishna knew swimming and he went faraway into the sea and counting on him that he would save me, even I dared to go ahead a little :P.
After this cool waterbath, we went for some breath stopping rides. We started with the double shot which shot up in a flash to a height of 25 ft and gave us a free fall from there. I was so hell scared. But the real scary and daring part was the Typhoon ride. It was like the pendulum ride of other parks. But instead of taking us only to the extreme ends, they made us to revolve in a full circle. And the moment we were on the highest point , we were completely upside down. For the moment I though that I would fall down and that would be the end of everything. But thank God, these americans have tied us down properly:). And here too they gave us a free fall from the highest point which took the hell out of me again.

After this fun filled and thrilling days it was time to say goood bye to Santa Cruz and to return to our hotel. But yeah it was a nice starting of the US stay:).

The pic album along with the captions can be seen at: http://picasaweb.google.com/bansal.vikas84/SantaCruz

Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-31826472236674621932007-09-10T23:27:00.001-07:002007-09-11T20:25:20.398-07:00First trip outside India.....Singapore!!!!!!My first international visit was supposed to be US. But Singapore got the honor. Actually Singapore was a transit for my trip from Hyderabad to San Fransisco and it was 10 hrs long... thanks to the Singapore Airlines. So we(Krishna, Santosh and me) thought of taking an advantage of this and went to see the Sentosa Island. Its a beuatiful tourist spot with a beach and lot of other funs. We went for underground water park in which I moved in a tunnel with a huge variety of fishes and other sea animals on my either sides in glass. It was so damn exciting to see all this from so close. Some times I had the feeling as if I am moving in the sea and these animals would just touch me. Oh I forgot to tell you that there was a small pond in which we could even touch these fishes( but gently). I was so excited on this part but also a little afraid and wasnt able to touch any of the fishes as they were too fast :(. I even saw the crabs and the jelly fish for the first time.

After this, I went for the Dolphin show. This was a real fun to see the dolphins acting on the directions of the trainer. They were acting so smart and so cute. One of my frens Chetan(Singapore local) even got a chance to shake hands with dolphin. After these two exciting shows we went for the beach. It was a nice and clean beach with people enjoying in the kayaks and all. Sadly we didn't had much time to do that. So we just sat on the beach side for some time and started back to airport. On our way, we grabbed some food and also the downtown area of Singapore.....the commercial hub of the country with huge skyscrapers. Some buildings were too big and too good.

Overall, this country had a good impression on my mind but I also had a feeling that India is not far behind. We have a metro system similar to them, though we that hav the sytem of taking the tickets ourselves from the automated machines(which even accpeted notes and gave back the exact change...didnt see this even in US). Also the buses were too good and the streets were excellent with greenery and flowers all around. Yea I know there was a lot more another stuff to be explored but gosh we were running out of time. My flight was sceduled at 5:00 and i just boarded it at 4:50...I know a close call.

And finally I was on my way to San Fransisco...about which I would write more in my next blog. :)

See the pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/bansal.vikas84/SingaporeVikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-41790127750406446442007-07-03T06:01:00.000-07:002008-06-16T11:01:23.269-07:00Finally.....So, after that long wait and suspense from Google, finally on June 4, 2007 I got a congratulations mail from HR that I have cleared the recruitment process and soon I am going to be a Googler. Some might describe it as dream coming true but it was even more than that.
The moment I received the good news, I was calling my parents and near dears to share the good news. I took out the Google T-shirt which was waiting for me for a month in my cupboard, but I couldn't wear it in my office. Alas!!. I got a chance to wear it only once I reached home.
And now I am eagerly waiting for 16 July, the day on which I am going to join the Google and become a googler officially!!
Thank You Almighty!!Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-83528349783345617072007-05-28T04:15:00.000-07:002007-07-03T06:14:27.425-07:00Waiting . . . .It was around in february when I applied for Google through one of my friends friend. He gave me and that my profile is good enough and hopefully I would get a telecon from the Google guys. I waited for a few days then. But when I didnt receive any communication from their, I lost the hope and stopped waiting and I though this chapter is closed here itself. But suddenly one day in April after (approx 2 months) I received a call from the Google HR and she said that they would like to take me in their process. It was a sudden surprise for me, but took it as a blessing in disguise. Disguise...why so!!because I was loking for a change and wasn't able to figure out where else to apply after I got an offer from MS.
She said me that if shortlisted, I would get an email and would receive a telecon from Mt. View. Though I didn't get any such mail but yea one night I did get a call from Mt. View at around 11 in the night. It was a total surprise for me and I didnt get any time for getting nervous or tensed, forget about the prep for this huge interview. But thank God it was very simple and I faired well. (Though later I learnt that the first one was simple for everybody).
Well I cleared this round and now it was the time to go to Hyderabad and visit the much talked about Google Office. I wont say it Campus because it wasn't. It was just one floor in a building. But the moment you enter inside you can sense that all the hype about it wasnt false. The Google T-shirts worn by almost evrybody were fascinating. For the first time I did an electronic signature and signed a Non Disclosure agreement befor entering the campus with a slip pasted on my pocket.
Had a lunch straight away and the cafeteria was cool with all kinds of eatables. Baskets full of fruits, fridge full of juices, milk, soft drink cans. The cubicles were a little small and congested though.
Had 4 rounds of my interviews and quite unexpectedly I was doing well in them.
After that the sweet HR- Anuradha had a chat with me after a wonderful lunch which had a huge variety of food: 5-6 kinds of salad, 3 types or rice, curd, some south Indian dishes(didnt like this part:(), fruits and yea Subway sandwiches. Anuradha told me that they would still take a lot of time in getting the final results and I started counting the days from that day onwards(oops!! I forgot to tell that this was May 11, 2007). So, in the meanwhile I could be just hopeful with a Google T-shirt(which was a small gift from their side) packed in my cupboard which I decided to wear on the day I get some final answer from their side.
After returning back, the painful period of waiting started. On monday I came to know that Krishna(the M-Tech guy from IIT B whom i met in my room in the guest house arranged by Google)had got a personal info form. That was an indication from their side" Dude, you have finished the technical rounds and we are considering you further but still dont start partying as you stand more chanes to be rejected than selected"...sounds weired na but it happens. It took me even one more week to receive this indication and in the middle of that waiting period I again started having a very strong feeling that my dream is again going away from me though I was still having a bright hope in deep of my hearts and at last I received this form on May 21. As I didnt want to delay my processing further I filled up the form and mailed it back on the same day, whereas Krishna took 3 days for the same :P.
The waiting period after this was the most painful. I knew that I had got an indication that I have cleared the technical rounds but as stated earlier their was equal probability of being rejected even now. To add upon my anxiety, Krishna got an offer after two days along with this other fellow batchee. My anxiety has got worse now. I mailed to Hr, no response from her side. Even tried calling her up, but no response. Everyday, their has been hardly any moment when I am not thinking of all this and then analyzing both sides of coin: what if I dont get thro :( and what if I really get through:). Going thro the biggest suspense period of my life. I have waited for the results in the past also, but that time I could judge how I have done, what I deserve and thus I could approximate what would i get. But here, I know how I have done but I dont know anything else. I have done my part of performing and whats left on my part is wait...wait...wait...!!!.Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8109278782348536163.post-50198987721180482222007-05-17T22:03:00.000-07:002008-06-17T22:43:57.513-07:00Ethics !!So, I am all set to write my first blog. Being a software engineer I cannot think anything better than writing about the biggest software company headed by the richest man of the world( yes, you would have guessed it by now, so no use of writing its name here and spoiling my blog)

Let me share an experience of mine which I had recently with this software giant. I underwent their interview process recently. Don;t worry I won't discuss the interview questions over here. For those who dont know about their process let me describe that briefly. Whenever they see any vacancies/requirements in their particular group/project they hire people specifically for the same. Please do note this line. This is particularly for experienced people and not the campus recruitment. So after 1 year of my work ex i learnt about an urgent opening in one of their groups through my friend who worked over there. So, I asked him to forward my CV for the same.
I finally got a call from them. They had a telephonic round which went very well but I didnt hear from them for around 15-20 days. I thought its a big company and are very specific about the person they hire. SO let them take their own time. FInally I received a call and was asked to come down to Delhi for the interview after 2 days itself. Well, this was done all very sudden but still I accepted that and went for the further rounds at their Delhi center. I faired well in these rounds as well and the group manager their was happy with my performance and told me that "they would make me an offer and would like to see me soon their dev center". I was really very happy and it was like dream coming true. I had the interview on saturday and the HR told me that he would get in touch with me on Tuesday positively. Well a week passed and I didnt get any information from their side. So I called up the HR which didnt had any knowledge about my status, surprising naaa. Anyways he told me that somebody would get in touch with me within 1 or 2 days.
And then they crossed all line of ethics and blah-2 which they hype a lot of. I received a mail from them after a week or so which said that they see me as a potential hire but currentlt they dont have any position open so they would consider me after 6-8 months if they have any openings. When I said how can they do so as a senior manager from their company has committed to me and I relied on the valuable words of this organisation. But the HR was least bothered about that and to just push me back told me that she would talk to that manager and let me know. But again there was no communication from their side and when finally i tried to reach her, she said a plain no without any further reasons and all.
I am not annoyed that I didn't get a chance to work in that company but rather I am happy that i was saved from working in such an unethical company. I know I am nobody to comment on their recruitemnt process but in my case it had the followng flows:

Lack of communication from their side. It was always delayed and they responded only when I tried to reach them

They conducted my interviews even when they didnt had any openings. I think they must understand the value of others time also.

Not keeping their words and commitment.

And after doing all this there was not a single hint of aplogy from their side( afterall they are the biggest software company and they have all the rights to be proud of).

Thank God, I am not working over there and have no plans to ever go in such a company.

Disclaimer: all the views are personal and should not be generalised.Vikashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03800039528887368279noreply@blogger.com2
